The prostate gland plays a vital role in secretion and transport of semen and fertilization of the woman’s egg (ovum). Therefore, keeping a healthy, properly functioning prostate is important to men.
Men’s prostate issues are difficult to self- diagnose and self-screen because of the subtle nature of symptoms and its anatomical location. Appropriate early screening is vital and important to overall health.
Because prostate problems can occur at any time and affect both your bladder and sexual activity, we offer blood testing called prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and digital rectal exams (DRE) to keep you healthy and active.
Dr. Lauren Underwood is a board certified urologist who focuses on both men and women’s urological care and treatment. She joined ChristiMD Medical Group in 2019 and has been treating patients in the San Antonio area prior to that time.
Both Dr. Christi and Dr. Underwood have a passion for excellence demonstrated by the many outstanding awards they have won. They have participated in new product research trials and launches to help patients overcome their urological and sexual dysfunction conditions.
This all leads to better care for their patients and the ability to offer latest techniques and treatments. Each doctor brings a skill set unsurpassed in the Houston and Katy, Texas area.
These could be a sign of inflammation of the prostate and a need for testing.

BPH is the enlargement of your prostate and affects approximately 75% of men over age 60. As you age, both your risk of prostate cancer and BPH increase. While BPH is not life-threatening, if uncontrolled and undiagnosed, it can potentially lead to more serious conditions.
Enlargement of the prostate and its impact on the bladder and kidneys may become a serious condition for some men. When the prostate increases in size, it can squeeze and limit urine flow from the urethra, the tube carrying semen and urine out of the body. This can lead to increasing pressure and blockages in the bladder and eventually the kidneys.
The following tests may be performed to determine if you have BPH and/or other conditions involving your prostate.
Once Dr. Underwood determines if you have BPH, she will review treatment options and establish a plan of care that is right for you. This will allow you to have a better quality of life and potentially fewer complications.
BPH Treatment options include:
Minimally invasive surgery including Urolift * NEW
Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP traditional and laser)

As you age, you are at risk of getting prostate cancer. It is estimated that approximately 1 in 7 men will be diagnosed with this disease. African American men and those with a family history of prostate cancer have an increased risk. It is recommended that you begin screening early.
Dr. Underwood will perform the digital rectal exam (DRE) as well as order your PSA blood test. PSA shows the amount of protein in your blood. Higher levels may indicate the need for additional treatment and testing.
Talk with Dr. Underwood and discuss your family history. Maintaining regular screening can often save your life or the spread of prostate cancer to other organs or areas in the body.
